How to Be an Ethical Manager

Workplace ethics can be complicated. Following ethics is even trickier for people who are at the top of the hierarchy in any organization. Here are some ideas to help bosses follow an ethical code of conduct:

  1. Be responsible- Remember what Spiderman said: “With great power comes great responsibility.” The higher your position and standing in your organization the greater an example you will have to set. Make your code of conduct clear to your employees and staff, and follow it.
  2. Practice honesty- Honesty is the best policy. Avoid the temptation to fudge the truth, even if you think the truth will cause financial loss.
  3. Be transparent- Transparency is a practice that needs to be followed in every organization. Hiding information about operations and profits can be very dangerous for the business and its reputation.
  4. Speak against wrongdoings- Dare to be a whistle blower. If you know that something is going wrong, have guts to speak against it or make a formal complaint about it. Speaking against what is wrong is the crux of ethics and ethical behavior.
  5. Define ethics in your organization- Every organization or company has its own set of rules. Clarify your company’s code of ethics, and codify it in writing.

Practicing the above listed principles will help you in following an ethical code of conduct and will enhance the reputation of your organization too.
